YUBA CITY, CA — Today, Congressman James Gallagher announced that he has accepted three debate invitations across California’s 1st Congressional District. Meanwhile, opponent Mike McGuire continues to play games and dodge opportunities to face voters in a public setting.
Gallagher has officially accepted the following debate invitations, pending Mike's participation:
- Mendocino Women’s Political Coalition - October 6
- Plumas County League of Women Voters - October 7
- KCRA Channel 3 - Recorded
While event organizers state that McGuire has “tentatively” committed to a forum in Mendocino County, McGuire has not accepted invitations from KCRA or the Plumas County League of Women Voters — despite publicly advertising an appearance in Plumas County on the same date.
“Mike drew this district for his own benefit; the least he can do is debate me in it,” said Gallagher. “His phony town halls with vetted guest lists don’t cut it. People deserve to compare our visions and ideas through an in-person debate. Perhaps Mike is ducking because in a debate he will have to explain his record. Mike will have to explain his votes to raise our gas prices and electricity rates. Mike will have to explain why he voted to release child predators from prison early. And Mike will have to explain why he continued to fund the corrupt High-Speed Rail while he cut wildfire prevention funding.”
Last month, Rep. Gallagher issued a formal challenge to McGuire to join him in a series of five debates across California’s newly redrawn 1st Congressional District. Instead, McGuire has been hosting controlled events with limited public details and a mandatory screening process to attend.
Gallagher said he welcomes invitations from organizations and media outlets wishing to initiate additional in-person debate events inside the newly drawn district.
