SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Congressman James Gallagher released a statement blasting California Attorney General Rob Bonta for altering the official ballot title on Proposition 39, the Voter ID and Citizenship Verification Initiative.

Bonta's office updated the title to frame standard voter verification as a restriction on voting rights in a blatant attempt to sabotage the measure. The move came after 1.3 million voters signed petitions under a clear, honest description to place Proposition 39 on the November ballot.

"Rob Bonta couldn't stop Proposition 39 from qualifying, so now he's trying to stop Californians from supporting it," said Congressman Gallagher. "More than 1.3 million citizens signed petitions under one ballot description, only to have Bonta rewrite it after the fact in a blatant attempt to poison the measure before a single vote is cast. It's the same playbook that McGuire and Sacramento Democrats used to try and stop Prop 36, our anti-crime measure that passed with nearly 70% of the vote. Or when they gutted an independent redistricting commission and redrew the maps to save their own skins. When they can't win on their merits, they rewrite the rules."
